How long will it take to get to Moose River Outpost?

We’re 2.5 hours from Augusta, ME, 3.5 hours from Portland, ME, and 5 hours from Boston. We’re 2 hours away from Quebec City, and about 2.5 hours away from the Lewiston-Auburn area of Maine.

Why would I go so far for my event?

Enter “Moose River Outpost” as a search term in Google Maps. When you do, you won’t see much on the page. In fact, the only feature you may notice at first is the Canadian border. MRO is out there. Some would say it’s intimidating to think about coming so far into the Maine wilderness.

What’s important to recognize is that MRO is remote, but that distance is one of the best things about the camp.  How many places are left in the United States where you can look up at the night sky and see planets, shooting stars, and even the haze of the Milky Way overhead? Where else can a guide lead your group out the door of their cabin and directly onto a hike up a 3600 foot mountain? How many camps stare across their lake and see nothing. No homes. No boats. Just uninterrupted shoreline and perhaps a passing loon. For that matter, what other camp can truly call their lake, their lake. 187 acres of glassy stillness in the morning, and 187 acres of skiing, sailing, paddling, and swimming until the sun dips low each evening. That’s MRO. That’s why it’s special, and that’s why guests drive past 100 other camps to get here each summer. Moose River Outpost is your chance to experience something as life-affirming and elemental as the creation story itself. This is God’s world: Wild and beautiful. We invite you to explore it with us.

Are all the buildings heated?

Almost every building in camp has heat. The only exceptions are Machias and Danforth. These two cabins are 3-season only. All meeting spaces can be heated for your group’s comfort.

Is hunting allowed on the MRO property?

If you discuss your plans for hunting with us ahead of time, many times we can accommodate you. In some cases, we may charge an extra fee for hunting. Fishing, of course, is not just allowed, but encouraged on Heald Pond. It’s a great way to enjoy the place. We do ask that as much as possible you honor our catch and release policy.

Can I bring my ATV to MRO?

ATVs are allowed on the property, but only for use on off-property trails. They should not be operated in Main Camp, unless they are to accommodate a guest with a disability. We ask that any ATV use at camp happens only on gravel roads and that riders wear helmets at all times.

Can I bring my mountain bike to MRO?

Yes, please! Can we ride with you?

What kind of clothes should we pack?

When packing, keep in mind that Moose River Outpost is 1500 feet above sea level and tends to run cooler than surrounding areas.  In summer, plan on temperatures in the 60s and 70s, and in spring and fall bring layers to allow for a range of temperatures.

Can I bring my own food to MRO?

We do not allow guest groups to cook in our commercial kitchen, but we do allow guests to bring snack foods and the like if you so choose. Meals are all-you-can-eat though, so don’t plan on going hungry. Also, we provide fresh fruit and other snacks any time.
